Warm compression test

Further to the cold compression test I did a while back I did a warm one over the weekend.

I ran the bike for 10mins round the block then quickly stripped the carbs off and took the plugs out. The compression test resulted in some ok figures and much better than when cold:

  • cyl 1 115
  • cyl 2 110
  • cyl 3 115
  • cyl 4 115

Reasonably pleased with that since anything over 100 is serviceable. However the TAX has run out now and I’ve SORN’d the bike. The intention is to strip it down and do some work on it because I’m fed up with feeling like it is going to breakdown on me all the time, so watch this space.

Had a minor shit yourself moment at the weekend when I walked into the garage only to find a can of expanding foam filler had exploded in the heat right next to the bike. Luckily I had an old curtain over the bike to keep the dust off and this kept most of the foam off the bike. Thankfully it has pretty much all come off now.

New Discs

I had a 4 wheel alignment done on the Boxster a few weeks back and the chap who carried out the work pointed out the state of the front discs. From the outside they looked fine, however the back face of the discs were badly scored and rusty. After closer inspection it was clear that they needed changing:

I did some searching on the web to find some replacement prices and decided to go with OEM parts from Jasmine Porschalink . New discs and pads + replacement caliper bolts came to £250.

The discs are serious bits of engineering and weight a hell of a lot, so much so that £250 felt like a bargain. Fitting was easy enough and job was done in under two hours.

Just need to let them bed in a bit now :)

Note to self fitted at 32,680 miles.

My fuse is getting shorter

Bikes has started and run fine the last two times I’ve tried it. So today I thought I’d nip round the petrol station and fill it up then get some bread for lunch.

Pulls into the petrol station and suddenly it dies. No electrics nothing !

Great, so I wheel it out of view of people to avoid any more embarrassment.

After thinking that I’m going to have to push this mofo the mile back home with a bad back; I remembered I had replaced a fuse a while back that was wrapped in silver foil! This fuse supplies the main ignition circuit and sure enough it was blown. I managed to wedge the two fuse connectors together to bypass the fuse and the swine started again.

Stuck a 25amp fuse back in and now have a couple if spares in my jacket pocket. Just have the feeling this fault is going to catch me out at the most inappropriate moment sooner or later!

Reasons to strip this bike down and restore it are mounting.
