After what seemed like an ages we finally, well my Dad finally found the correct gearbox gasket for the Limo. I met my Dad at the yard where he works and where the Limo is currently parked up and we fitted the gasket and refilled the gearbox. This was a real pain in the ass, since the only filler on the gearbox is the dip stick hole! Putting 7Ltrs of ATF down a hole with a bore size no bigger than a pencil in high winds is a time consuming operation. With a combination of plastic hose, a horse syringe and a funnel we got there. Which incidentally reminds me that I must clear out the boot of the Subaru because it currently has a set of overalls, a pair of steel toe cap boots, a load of plastic tubing, horse syringes and rubber cloves in it and I really don’t want to have to try and explain why if I get stopped by the law.
Finally with the gearbox now driving the rear wheels for a change and all four wheels actually being bolted to the car we ventured out on to the road to test we could get 3rd gear. We drove through the nearest village at a very funereal pace, both in our overalls, which felt a bit weird and must have looked a bit weird, to a nearby disused airfield. Once on the air field we gave it the beans and yep the old beast slipped into 3rd at about 50 which was hailed with simultaneous whooping and jumping up and down in the seat from both of us.
After a little fettling with the screen washer and rear plate light we tentatively booked an MOT, after questioning the station on the size of his ramp! Surprise is not the word to describe my reaction when I got a text from Dad telling me it had passed!
Question now has to be what the hell am I going to do with the old gall. She is now Tax’d, MOT’d and insured and I really feel like I should use it for something before trying to fine some nutter on eBay to buy it off me.
